This basement renovation transformed a fully gutted lower level into a comfortable and versatile extension of the home. The finished space includes a bright family room with a gas fireplace, two bedrooms, an office or studio, a three-piece bathroom, and updated stairs connecting the basement to the main floor.
With the basement already stripped back by the homeowners, the project required rebuilding and finishing the space as a cohesive living environment. The new layout needed to accommodate several distinct functions—including recreation, work, sleeping, and bathing—while maintaining a consistent design throughout the lower level.
Basements can also feel dark or disconnected from the rest of a home, so the finishes needed to create warmth and visual continuity without sacrificing durability.
Germano Creative completed the basement with durable vinyl plank flooring, a coordinated neutral paint palette, and practical spaces designed around the family’s needs. A gas fireplace with a streamlined drywall surround became the focal point of the recreational room, while an oak mantel introduced warmth and connected visually with the new oak stair railing.
The three-piece bathroom was given a more dramatic identity with Benjamin Moore Hale Navy walls, crisp white fixtures, and flooring carried through from the surrounding basement.
The family room uses a restrained neutral palette to make the lower level feel brighter and more spacious. Wood-look flooring adds warmth and visual texture, while the streamlined fireplace surround keeps the room feeling clean and uncluttered. The stained oak mantel provides a subtle focal point and coordinates with the stair railing to connect separate areas of the renovation.
In the bathroom, the deep navy walls create a bold contrast with the white vanity, toilet, and shower. Continuing the wood-look flooring into the room helps maintain consistency with the rest of the basement, while chrome fixtures and reflective surfaces keep the darker colour from making the compact space feel closed in.
The completed basement provides substantially more usable living space while supporting several different household needs. The family room offers a comfortable place to relax around the fireplace, while the bedrooms, office or studio, and bathroom allow the lower level to function as a complete and flexible part of the home.
