"We needed a bedroom for family visits and I needed an appropriate area for my sewing and machine embroidery work. We chose Suzette because her estimate was detailed, down to the hinges on the doors, and we felt comfortable that there would be no extra charges that would sneak in, except for changes that we specifically requested. Suzette gave us a schedule when things would be done and everything happened exactly as we were told. When we signed the contract, we even knew when the final inspection would take place. We didn't need to be critical of workmanship because Suzette was far more demanding of her subcontractors than we could ever be. "Our renovations began September 9th as contracted. We were using our bathrooms by October 9th. Suzette our contractor has the ability to organize all the sub contractors that are needed at the right time to do their part in the renovation. "If you're looking for a cookie cutter basement renovation with a lightning fast completion schedule that gets the job done according to someone else's vision for design and materials, then Suzette Mariz and Germano Creative IS NOT the choice for you! If, however, you want a company that comes in and, right from the very beginning, works with you to achieve the results that YOU imagine, then Germano deserves your attention. From the moment Suzette walked into our home, we had an intuitive sense that we would work well together. She took way more time than any other company in the beginning stages of listening, measuring and planning the best possible use of our space. From the very beginning of the project to the end (today!) Suzette kept us informed of work schedules, who would be coming and going and when she would be on site. She provided daily updates and gave us ample time to make decisions that needed to be made along the way. The work-site was cleaned at the end of each day and we were able to live our lives without worrying about what was happening downstairs. Suzette worked with the town on parking easements, permits and inspections. This was truly her project. You often hear about projects going overtime and over budget. In our case, Suzette kept both on track and our project has been completed on time and on budget! But there are two very important things with which I'm walking away. We were ultimately and immediately most impressed with Suzette and Germano Creative Interiors for renovations throughout the spring and summer of 2015. Throughout the process Suzette was always very organized and never failed to communicate what we could expect in advance and during every stage of the project. She worked with us to keep costs down and guided us on jobs we chose to do on our own. Her attention to detail and experience with her tradesmen gave us confidence that each project was completed with accuracy. "What I love about Suzette is that she doesn't just take your plans and execute. She makes sure that they make sense. She provides you with her advice and explains why she would recommend certain changes. She is also very detail-oriented, a good communicator, and she always follows up on what her tradespeople are doing to ensure that it is top quality. Our basement reno turned out fantastic! It was a self-contained apartment for my in-laws, complete with kitchen, living room, bedroom, and bathroom (with laundry). Details like rounded wall corners (so the kids running down the hall don't catch a corner) were always great. The materials and workmanship were top-notch. The project finished on time and on budget, since every change that is made (whether additions or subtractions) are catalogued as they are made. The price wasn't the cheapest of all of the quotes we got, but the saying "you get what you pay for" is pretty true and your home is perhaps your biggest investment. We would have liked Suzette to be the one to finish the last room (removed from the original work due to financial constraints), but the cost was too much to bring everyone in from Guelph. One thing I would like to see is a team of tradespeople more local to the GTA, so that small jobs could be done at a better price point. "Dear Editor: It was with interest I read the recent letter to the editor from a Cambridge resident who had been burned by a contractor. My husband Dave and I have a story to offer from the opposite end of the spectrum. One year ago, we decided to have our hell-hole of a basement refinished, and called six contractors for quotes and ideas. For the most part we were impressed by them all, though some quotes were astronomical compared to others. We narrowed it down to two companies, both of whom had solid reputations, glowing references and who seemed truly eager to earn our business. Each referred us to websites, made arrangements for us to view basements they had completed, and provided Dave and I with DVD's of their company's showcase of renos. I don't imagine we gave them an easy time of it, as I am a HGTV junkie, and believe I have learned what to ask, and what to watch out for (thanks Mike Holmes, as irritating as you are, I did listen!). In the end we decided that Germano Creative Interior Contracting would be our contractor. It is a great pity that I have put off writing our praise and offering our applause to Suzette and her team. She was focused, diligent, no-nonsense, fun, respected by her tradesmen, on budget, able to troubleshoot, offered opinions, lent a listening ear, was organized, punctual and precise. "Germano Creative Interior was hired to do a complete renovation of our washroom (a difficult space), replace all baseboards, trim and inside doors on the main level, 1 exterior door, paint kitchen and living room, and install a few updated fixtures. From the moment Suzette first met with us, my husband and I had a good feeling about her. She was knowledgeable and thorough when looking at the scope of the project. She was up front in her assessment of some of the work to be done, suggesting in one case it needed to be done "right", unlike another contractor who suggested we try and hide the issue. Suzette did not try to low ball the amount of time the renovation was going to take, and was up front with that as well. Not only does Suzette have the knowledge of the physical space and the construction end of it, but she also has an eye for the design elements of the space which was very helpful. She could visualize what would look good and made suggestions, but was very clear that we were in the driver seat as to what the final decisions were.
